Obituary for Bernice Paggett (Crawford)

Print
Bernice Paggett was born April 8, 1947 in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Bernard Crawford and Annie Ruth Jefferson. Bernice was the only child to this union. Forrest Belt welcomed the opportunity to share with Annie Ruth in parenting Bernice at a tender age. While an only child, Bernice enjoyed spending her summers with family in Madison, Georgia on the farm of her grandfather Lee Jefferson and Annie Bell Mapp-Jefferson.

In her youth, Bernice Paggett was an active member of the family church West Mitchell CME Church. She enjoyed Christian fellowship as a member of Cathedral of Faith, and later in life attended Hillside Truth Chapel, Dr. Barbara Lewis King in Atlanta, Georgia. When visiting with her daughter’s family in California, she became an associate member of Christ Liberation Ministries, Pastors William and Thembekila Smart in Los Angeles, California. Bernice enjoyed the word of God and expressing her love for the Lord through singing in the choir.

Raised in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia, Bernice attended E.A. Ware Elementary School, graduated Booker T. Washington High School, and went on to study at Morris Brown College. As a working professional, she served at the United States Postal Service as a Human Resource Specialist for more than 35 years.

On September 26, 1970, Bernice married the love of her life, Larry Paggett, son of Elbert Andrew Paggett and Rochelle Howard Paggett. They enjoyed more than forty years of marriage. Larry welcomed raising William Bailey (Regina Bailey), Elletta Bailey Denson and Kenny Bailey (from her previous marriage) and their youngest daughter born to their union Kimberly Paggett Willis (Lorenz Willis).

As the generations grew, a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren were blessed to experience the caring commitment to family that Bernice displayed. As Bernice’s favorite holiday was Christmas, her cooking and festive home environment created an ambiance of cheer. With a tradition of decorating elaborately for the Christmas season, Bernice went to great lengths to fill her home with her favorite seasonal plant, red poinsettias, as well as brightly strung lights, garland columns and holiday scents of allspice that welcomed all to celebrate.

For leisure, Bernice was an avid reader, enjoying book series like George R. R. Martin, Game of Thrones, Ann Rule’s true crime stories and John Gresham’s mystery novels. She immensely enjoyed volunteering as an active parent at each of her children’s schools, serving in roles such as Band Booster President for Clark Atlanta University’s Mighty Marching Panther Band (94’-98’). Her fundraising abilities contributed to hundreds of students having access to brand new instruments, uniforms and travels to perform abroad. One of her fondest memories was chaperoning with her husband as the band went on a trip to perform in Bermuda. With a love for travel, the experience of fine cuisine and different coffees from around the world, Bernice was classy, hard-working, intellectually astute, and faith driven, instilling all these qualities and more into her children.

As Bernice goes to rest from this earthly journey to be with the Lord Jesus Christ, rejoicing with the angels, she leaves her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to carry her memory in love.
